FedEx's parcel management program, probably used by most businesses in
the US and a great many private individuals, requires strong
encryption to communicate with FedEx.

Recently I saw Ricochet's shop display. They sell a cell phone
internet connection. Encryption was the fourth point in their list of
selling points, indicating that the masses are worried about people
listening in on cell phone conversations, cloning cell phones, etc.

Of course once the stuff gets on the internet, it is open to all
comers, but clearly people are concerned.

Similarly security is a part of DCOM, and many of you are using DCOM
without knowing it. This security is a pain, and causes things to go
wrong with great regularity, but programmers mostly do not disable it,
presumably because security counts, even amongst the masses.
