A few thoughts on this.
1) Intel has said that it will have a control panel that turns the number
on and off. Obviously, they have been working with Microsoft on this.
2) This has very interesting implications for the entire
authentication/certification authority market. If Intel creates a way to
identify/verify every person, will they get a slice of the CA pie? It
certainly seems that this gives them a hook into that sort of business.
3) Is it FUD? Even Intel seems to think not. They have talked to at least 3
privacy advocacy firms, all of which have mixed feelings about it. The
company seems to be walking on eggs. While much of this depends on the
details, the plans seems to have a number of privacy implications.
Intel is having a meeting on this today, so more details will be
forthcoming. I will post them here, if there is interest.

This just seems like FUD to me. ID numbers should help detect theft and
fraud. They aren't going to compromise privacy. I expect it's going to
behave
just like the debugging registers. Nobody is going to be able to get at
your
chip's ID without running software on your system.
