This discussion deserves an FAQ of its own and I agree with Perry's desire
to curtail it here, but I would like to make one more observation. The very
lack of case law on the question of self incrimination and cryptographic
keys  demonstrates that encryption could not have been much of a problem
for US law enforcement so far.
