Dear All,

At long last I am launching the archive mailbot
I announced in February.

The list "cryptography@c2.net" is the only list being
archived by my robot. If you see this copied to another
list it does not mean _that_ one is being archived.

Much of that time has been spent inspecting posts
and adding keywords by hand. I have not done this
for all posts though. (Not to mention correcting
the dates after I added a bunch of posts from the backlog
as 'today' rather than the dates they were posted.)

Credits go to: (in order of speedy reply)
Nelson Minar for pointing out that the noarchive field
should be compatible with the dejanews one.
(This is not done yet, but will be RSN.
after I get confirmation of the exact form to use.
I'm launching this before getting that detail as I
                think you've waited long enough.)

Edgar Swank for persuading me to include a 'grep' function.

Arnold Reinhold for providing his store of past posts before I
               started collecting.

Larry Wall for a language that despite the craziest operator
precedence I've ever seen still allowed me to do this
faster than any other I know of.

Thanks too to the rest of you for not asking to be excluded from
the archive. It'll be better with us all there.

Please try to include keywords in your posts (header or body):
keywords: archive archives mailbot
Easy as that. Keywords, senders, dates and replies all work through
a fast index, whereas grep grinds my disk.

It works basically as I described before (and this from someone
whose final specs usually get written after the program).

The main addition is 'grep' where
     grep md[45] 'key recovery' concrete
works like
      egrep -in 'md[45]|key recovery|concrete'
but with a maxhits count (per file and overall).

To try out the mailbot send mail to arcbot@notatla.demon.co.uk
This example message will get you started.

help
longhelp
keyword url concrete
date 04dec1996
get /etc/passwd # why not ? won't happen
get 199703181845.naa14009@jekyll.piermont.com
get 199702251844.saa00433@notatla.demon.co.uk
reply 199703220147.baa01386@server.test.net

If you have problems let me know. Remember as I am a dial-up
user you can expect a delay (up to a day may be common).

I think I can tell the difference between a keen user and a pest.
I'm hoping I won't have to bar anybody.

I'm still interested in getting a defence against forged mail,
if anyone has tips on doing that.
