White House to announce encryption policy change on Monday?

White House chief of staff John Podesta will be talking about encryption
policy at 10 am at the National Press Club on Monday.
According to a White House source, the topic will be the "need to address
public safety and law enforcement needs." The White House also said Podesta
will talk about updating "laws and practices in the face of changing
technology, while protecting privacy and civil liberties."
Keep in mind that Podesta is a very smart fellow, and shepherded through
the latest encryption policy change, announced on September 16, 1999 at the
White House press conference he attended. He's shown up at meetings of the
President's Export Council encryption subcommittee, and co-chaired a
high-level interagency group on the topic.
I don't know the content of his remarks. But when folks start talking about
the need to protect public safety and update laws to reflect changing
technology, I'm not sure if I'm terribly optimistic.
