I can't see how anyone can claim SET is the successor to SSL. Assuming an
arbitrarily good, complete, human engineered, etc., implementation of SET,
you still need SSL/TLS/SHTTP/whatever if you want privacy for your shopping
experience, confidentiality of the credit card brand you select, secure
delivery of digital goods, etc., etc., etc.
