It will change that:  

If a volunteer part time effort can break it using general 
purpose hardware, they will realize the implications of a 
dedicated for-profit effort using specialized hardware, and
if they do not, it will make no difference.  

Ultimately this story will be boiled down to a single 
sound bite

        Cypherpunks broke DES.
