When I pledged about 11 years ago, we told about "Black Caucus" chapters
that abandoned the basic formula of A-Phi-O and lost their charters. I
for one think that this is very regrettable.
When you were a scout, did you worry about the ethnicity of your troop?
I didn't. And I hope you didn't either.
When you pledged APO, was it for service and sustained scouting
principals, or something else?
There are many social groups, some of which are fraternities, that
emphasise the social aspects of ethnicity. If this is what interests you,
join up. If the group doesn't exist that will fill your particular need,
create it.
At least when I pledged, APO didn't demand exclusive devotion. You can
belong to a social organization, a religion, and APO.
For the sake of what APO stands for, it seems wise to stick to the basics.
Fraternally yours, Victor Neves
