Hi everybody! I know I don't post very often, but I guess I finally
decided to put in my 2 cents... And I have to say, I agree completely
with with Kirk Brady. Our diversity is what makes us stronger. The
chapter I pledged, in the two and a half years I was there, was a great
example of diversity. In the time I was there, we had brothers of all
ages, ranging from 18-year old freshmen to 35+ yr old graduate students.
We had, and they still have, brothers with varying disabilities, from
learning disabilities to cerebral palsy. We had brothers from all over,
even from *South America*. All working, serving, learning, and just
generally having a heck of a lot of fun together. And that's just in
*one* chapter. I've seen even more examples at sectional and regional
conferences. And I can only imagine the diversity out there in the rest
of the country...
It doesn't matter how each chapter decides to refer to itself. A
Phi O, A Phi Q, APO, AFW, or any of the other various versions I've seen,
we're all still Alpha Phi Omega, and *that's* what counts. Personally, I
use A Phi O, but that's simply because that's how I always heard it down
in Pennsylvania, and it's become habit for me. But the point is, it doesn't
matter. Use whatever abbreviation you want.
I am a Star Trek fan (YES, I *will* admit that, and proudly!). The
Vulcans have an ancient (to them) philosophy called IDIC, or Infinite
Diversity in Infinite Combinations. It essentially echoes what Brother
Brady said, that we are all unique, and that we should celebrate
diversity, because it is what gives us our strength.
Forgive me for rambling on, all, but I just finally decided that I
had to say something. Thanks for taking the time to read this (at least
I hope you read it...), and I'll get down of my soapbox and slip back
into my relative anonymity. Feel free to respond to me privately. If
you have a differing view point, that's cool too. I *try* to keep an
open mind (at least I like to think I try to...). I look forward to
hearing from any of ya... Take care, y'all, and remember IDIC. :)
