Mu Chapter's requirements for the DSK are the following: (shamelessly stolen
from an email message sent to me by the sergeant-at-arms. he puts it so much
better than I ever could.)
The DSK is an award given to a brother based on the following criterian:
Distinguished service on the chapter level that is making an
outstanding and unique contribution to chapter as a whole.
Exemplifying and furthering in demonstratable ways, the principles
of leadership, friendship, and service.
Making a sustained contribution in a leadership role over time.
In order to get a DSK, a person needs to get the vote of...sheesh, I can't
remember the exact amount, but some large majority of chapter members.
The person who gets the DSK does not necessarily have to be a graduating
senior, although many of them are. We don't have a limit to the amount of DSKs
we give, although sometimes we don't give any. (I don't think we did this
semester.)
Before we do the vote, we make sure that everyone understands the seriousness
of the award...that it is not to be given lightly. The recipients are not
announced until the end of semester banquet, usually about 2-3 weeks after the
vote is taken. We've never had a problem with people "campaigning" for the
award...our unspoken rule seems to be that those who would deserve a DSK are
generally the absolute LAST people who would think they deserve one. I hope
this has helped.
