On the Chapter DSK...
At my undergraduate Chapter, Delta Upsilon at ESU the DSK was an annual
award selected by a vote of the entire chapter.
The service committee would prepare a ballot of the Brothers that were
currently elligible with a brief resume of each (so that if someone was
hazy on what a particular Brother had done we could check back on it.)
Previous recipients of the award would conduct the ballot process. We
had for ours a ratio of 1 award to every ten on the ballot. Many times
there were only a couple on the ballot so there has been only one awarded
forthe past couple of year. We presented two at one Formal but one was
for the year prior. They Key itself came over the summer.
But the criteria for the award are very similar to Mu Chapter:
-Distinguished service on the chapter level
-Outstanding contribution to the Chapter program as a whole
-Living by the cardinal principles: LF&S
-Outstanding leader in the Chapter
-Overall service to the campus
For Delta Upsilon we also include advisors in the ballot for this honor.
They can serve the chapter in variety of important ways.
For those of you involved with the Order of the Arrow's election process
for the Ordeal from the Unit, that is similar to the way we selected the
recipient of the DSK. The winner must have 51% of the vote in his/her
favor. There have been years where no one has gotten it even if they
received the top votes because they did not have at least 51%. This
helps make it not a popularity contest.
The DSK Election committee keeps the results "quiet" until the awards
presentation either at a formal or awards meeting.
