I Think Pete summed it up, because they can. People will
continue to spam for as long as they think they gain something
from it. The reason your mail most likely get's bounced
back to you is the account which sent the mail was cancelled
for abussing terms of membership used by most providers. If
you happen to be online or get the mail within a few hours
of it being send you may be able to reply to it. But, any
time after about a day the account is probably cancelled.
If you noticed the spam about the magazines was posted three
times from three different providers. That would be because
after each posting the account would have been terminated,
unfortunately allowing "free access" to the net will result
in abuse. The last spam, the holiday one, was forged. I sent
a copy of it to the postpaster at the same site as the mailing
list, with luck/hope (s)he will either have some kind of log
of the event (it did cause an error when it was processed)
and I will beable to get the information to track back to the
poster's provider. If you want to make a difference, you have
to convince the people who are spamming or paying to have
this spamming done that it will only harm them. Think of
the spamming as those flyier who people put under wipers
in parking lots. As long as one person uses those flyier
people will continue to use them, as long as one person says
I heard about you from some e-mailing people will continue
to do it. The best way to deal with spamming is either
to just ignore it, or to tell the people who want your
business that you will never use them becase of their
actions. I know that there are people who pay to read this
list, and all our talk about this spam is just wasting thier
money. If you want the spam to stop it, make sure you never
use anything which is advertised that way. And look for the
person or company who is trying to behind the posting and
direct your comments to them, telling them that you are
boycotting them and will make sure all your friends will
boycott them. If you want to respond to the posting,
you might want to cc the postmaster at the site, but
if the post is more than a few hours old you are probably
wasting everyone's time.
