I hate to inject myself in this discussion and really have no opinion and
believe that the actives should do whatever they want. Nevertheless, as
a volunteer who has helped plan more than several conventions, I can tell
you that scheduling our event between Christmas and New Years (when
virtually no organization holds a meeting and hotels are empty) really
does help us keep the price reasonable. For example, the 1984 convention
was held here in DC at the Hyatt Regency; the hotel would have had to
lay some employees off during the holidays but for our convention. They
didn't want to do that and, as a result, were willing to negotiate prices
in more than good faith. Thus, Loren's point is well taken and shows
that we must think about more than just whether any of our chapters are
in school during the time we plan our meetings.
