Dear Brothers:
Lately I have let conversations go by without responding,
however, tonight I felt a need to speak up. When I was student at
Muhlenberg College, I was proud to say many things -- of my Boy Scouting,
my religion, and of course my pride in my community service. By the word
"my" I am not serving just myself, rather I am including all connected
with my experiences. Clearly, there are many Eagle Scouts, Jewish
students, and many many people involved with community service.
Tonight I was privileged with reading some 79 messages - half
from APO-L and half from ABLE-JOB (a listserv dedicated to individuals
who help disabled and the like find jobs). Ironically, the messages for
both groups were very much the same. I wasn't certain (at times) which
group I was actually reading from. An article about principles, another
on leadership in nineties, one on summer conferences, another on the
upcoming conference -- let me tell you I read every message twice just to
make sure I wasn't sleeping.
So I sat and thought about what I'd say to our organization,
Alpha Phi Omega and here is what I want to say:
Our principles dictate that we are a national service fraternity.
By the word service, we include our duties to performing service -- these
include leadership as well as friendship. One does not need to call
leadership and friendship titles in our organization -- we are and shall
always be a service fraternity. We are and shall be distinguished in our
value of promoting leadership and friendship as we commit ourselves to
service endeavors. We are and shall be a voice of service in our college,
our community, in our nation, and in our world. We are and shall be an
organization committed to causes of worthwhile endeavors. We are and
shall be an organization devoted to developing leaders in all manner of
our labour in service. We are and shall be an organization promoting
friendship in our ranks, that the greatest one can give is to be called a
friend. Finally, we are and shall be an organization of leaders,
friends, and servers.
