Fellow APO brothers,
I'm participating in a service event this weekend which many Alpha Phi
Omega chapters like yours could make into a service project. The
organization's name is named "City Year," and they are a community service
organization for youths (age 17-23) and they are going to be operating a
fund-raising event they call a "Serve-a-thon" this Saturday, October 21st in
6 six major cities in the U.S.: Boston, Chicago, Columbia (?), Columbus,
Providence, and San Jose. City Year is a member of the Americorps National
Service Network and this Serve-a-thon event they are holding is open to
anyone from the general public who wants to participate.
Basically, they are a service corps. whose members spend ten-months
doing a variety of community service work full-time. The events they'll be
doing at this "Serve-a-thon" day are open for any person/groups that enroll
to participate. The projects available for this event give participants a
chance to perform direct service for the community, see what life in the
Corps. is like, and possibly help support the organization by spreading
their name and raising money for it.
If your chapter is located in the vicinity of one of the cities this
organization operates in, perhaps you might want to propose participating in
this event as a service project and see if the chapter is interested.
Groups of people, like the chapter, can participate in the event together
on a specific project as a team.
I'm going there as part of a team formed by the company I work for at a
site in the Boston area. The only contact information for City Year that I
have is for the Boston division of the Corps. at (617)-350-0800. If you're
in another city, write to me at parker@cs.WPI.EDU and I'll call them here
for you and get the proper number for your area. It's not too late to join,
and based on what they're doing here in Boston at least, it looks like a
great opportunity to perform a day of service worth giving.
Also, if your chapter doesn't want to participate/can't participate due
to location, this is also a fund-raising event and part of partipating
involves (trying to) collect pledge money for the organization. They seem
like a worthwhile cause to contribute to if your chapter has raised money
recently and is looking for a charity to contribute to. If you want more
information about them or want an address to send a donation to, you can
call them above or write back to me and I'll try and get you the information
you need. Anything your chapter can do will be greatly appreciated. Thank
you.
