So far, hotel costs seem to drive everyone's argument.
I think that more than 20% of undergrads fly. I also think that more people
should be encouraged to take planes or trains to the conference, as I
personally think that 20-30+ hour straight driving is a plain stupid idea to
save money.
I am not convinced. No one has shown me specific examples or figures showing
the addition. I also believe that the silent majority not on the net needs to
be heard. And in this growing fraternity, god forbid if there was a drop in
percent of brothers going, you'd still have 2000 or near so in attendance.
Hundreds of us would go no matter when it is... and there will always be a group
who can't go for price or timing reasons.
Staggering times is a good idea. And if you think you'll have a problem
financing the trip in a year, try this idea.
Starting NOW, set aside a large container as travel fund. Each evening, empty
your quarters or other change into the cup. DDon't touch this money until
you cash it in for a plane ticket. At $1 a day, you'll have $400 or so for
your trip already saved up in this manner by November, 1996.
Your chapter can also do this in the office then split the proceeds later on.
Or do fundraisers. You can even raise your own money. Think about what
you could do...
Don't just sit around and expect next summer's earnings to foot the bill.
Don't buy that CD a week for your collection. USE DISCIPLINE AND ACT NOW!
I save my quarters at the rate of $2 a day. I eat a lot of my own food, and
not out all the time. I use coupons. I make few unnecessary purchases. I
save vacation time and plan ahead. And thus I KNOW I'll be conference bound
when I want to.
