Not to take sides, since an alumni position doesn't, and really shouldn't,
mean squat, but I have worked with youth (HS up to College) students for
five years now. Alcohol being present is a danger for _some_ of these
youth. They are not drinkers, until the alcohol is available, and then, the
first time they are around it, BLAMO! Some youth come out of HS alcoholics.
Yes, this can happen. There should always be a non-alcoholic option
available when a large group of people get together. I know some people go
to the events and don't drink and are quite comfortable.
One other example. For some people alcohol is synonomous with "I am going
to be beaten again." So when they are at an event, and alcohol is present,
they start to shy away and hide.
These are extreames, I know, but they do exist. Although I see no problem
with alcohol at events, steps should be taken Maybe talk to the people who
want a non-alcohol event and ask them to help plan one at the conventions.
Just my $.02 worth (if that much)
