It has been interesting to read all the personal responses to request for
By-Law comments, but I'm really CONFUSED as to why people aren't just
posted to the list. Also, I was hoping to see what people are planning to
do on National Service Day (Nov 4). Our group really struggled with ideas
that resolve around recycling.
Just wanted to clear up a few things in regard to by-laws that seem to
have caused some confusion or concern:
1) How can we enforce e-mail requirement? We don't really plan to police
this pursay, but we did decide to make it a requirement. I suppose we
could do random checks of individuals who we suspect not checking their
email... I believe our student accounts have the ability to request
receipt when mail is actually read (meaning a reply is automatically sent
to sender when reader reads the mail). 100% of our group thought that
this was an excellent addition... Also, our office has multiple computers
right next to it (practically in it) so we could easily subdue the
phobias.
2) I appreciate your suggestions to give webmaster a more generic title or
include its duties under someone else, but the group decided this was a
FULL-time officer position and really liked the title "webmaster." When
the web is replaced by something else (will be years down the road) then
I'm sure the chapter can change the name :-) Our group is really starting to
catch the WWW wave and plans to use it extensively... To show this point,
our group had about 600 accesses to the homepage from its creation last
February to when the counter was reset about 8 weeks ago with upgrade.
Since the reset, it has experienced over 2400 accesses. We are looking to
include pictures, scrapbook, detailed chronicle of events, member
information, and more. The job will easily takes hours a week even with
help.
3) Our Membership VP serves as Pledge Trainer elect. This means that the
person elected to Membership VP automatically becomes Pledge Trainer the
following semester. By being Membership VP, we figure they get a good
pulse on what the current membership is, plan rush, and then train the
pledges.
4) Voting for pledges... Thanks for all the concerns and kudos regarding
our way of doing things. As a petitioning group, we have had open
membership since day one (who is gonna vote?) so we just want to carry
that over into brotherhood cause it has worked well. There was actually a
lot of discussion about whether we would even vote on exceptions (pledges
who didn't meet set of criteria), but it was decided we would. Pledges
who do meet the criteria get invited into brotherhood automatically.
