Well, since it was a workshop that I co-presented, and since I presented
that part, I have no problem clarifying. Look at the National Pledging
Standards, number 16 (I think, don't have my notes at work). It deals
with pledges learning about the Oath of Loyalty and Service, and how it
should be taught to the pledge class.
As for being a really good idea, I might suggest that you attend said
workshop at the next conference where it might be presented (you could be
at Region IX, for example...) for a proposed explanation and other "good
ideas." The workshop title is "Brotherhood 401: Advanced Concepts in
Brotherhood" and was co-presented by Linnea Steffens, Zeta Beta Chapter
President (who did an excellent job, by the way.)
While we're on that topic - I'd like to thank Chris Harwell, of Mu Xi
chapter, who (before I could say it as part of the presentation) pointed
out that this is not a secret society and that this and other items of
related import are printed in the Fraternity's publication "In The
Beginning..." (a whopping $.75 each copy.)
Finally, although I don't remember her name, someone in that workshop
asked me why it wasn't in the pledge manual - which, of course, I cannot
answer. But I suggested a change to the pledge manual could be made via
convention resolution - which she said she would most certainly try.
One might ask why #16 is in the pledging standards - and although I
cannot give a definitive answer, I would suspect that it's because if
this is the oath by which we are to live - then it should be learned, for
it is at least as important as any of the other things we learn as
pledges, and I know of exactly ZERO chapters which teach things of this
type after activation, although there may be chapters out there which do so.
