Dear Brothers,
I've been reading the letters of advice to the big brother of the gay pledge
for the past several days. I have never had personal experience with the type
of situation presented in the original letter, but my chapter here at ECU has
handled similar situations very well in the past. Right now there are at least
three of the brothers at this chapter that will tell you straight up that they
are gay (no pun intended). At our semi-formal this past weekend you could have
seen guys dancing slow songs together. Now I'm not going to say that it didn't
raise some eyebrows, but those of us who are straight just let it go and didn't
butt our noses where they didn't belong. A brother (or pledge) should not be
judged on what sex they are attracted to, but on their commitment to the
cardinal principle of APO . . . Leadership, Friendship, and Service. My view
on the situation of the gay pledge is that maybe he/she is not the problem at
all. Maybe those brothers who are having problems with that pledges sexual
orientation need a little refresher on the principle Friendship, and what it is
supposed to mean. We, as brothers, make a commitment to preserving and
advancing this three-fold principle, but in this case I think the enthusiasm of
the brothers in question is a bit lacking.
Sorry, didn't mean to be brusque about it. That is just what I think given
what I have heard.
