Hey Brothers:
As you may have noticed, my fraternity terminology tends to differ from
that of the "mainstream" Greeks. That's because I pledged parallel to that of
a Black Greek organization. But for those of you who wonder what I mean whin I
say "cross" or "line", now here's your chance. I will give you a list of defi-
nitions of terms.
(Disclaimer: My knowledge and mentioning of these terms is STRICTLY for infor-
mation purposes only and does not necessairily constitute personal subjectation
or endorsement of these terms, by words or deeds).
Smoker: Prospective pledge information meeting
Line: Pledge class. "Go on line" means to pledge. Pledges are lined up by
height shortest to tallest and after they cross, they are assigned
numbers according to height (shortest pledge is #1, etc.).
Burning: When a pledge looks an active in the eyes. Is considered disan act of
disrespect on the part of the pledge.
Club: An active's "little" (A neo who is a "1" would have the shortest pledge
as a club, or "little". Neos always have the following line as clubs)
Going Underground: Pledging in secret.
Heat: Hazing (Remember my disclaimer)
Brother (or bro' for short): An initiatied brother, not necessairily active
with the chapter.
Pro(bate) Show: Entertainment show performed by pledges. These events are
announced solely by word of mouth and is a sign to the pledge
that initiation is VERY soon thereafter.
Pledge Names: This is not to be confused with the line's name. This is the
name of the pledge club. Exs.
A-Phi-A (Sphinxmen)
K-A-Psi (Scrollers)
Sigmas (Crescents)
Omegas (Lampados)
Iotas (Centaurs)
AKA (Ivys)
Deltas (Pyramids)
S-G-Rho (Auroras)
Zetas (Archonians)
Cross (the burning sands): Initiation in the fraternity.
Sands: Bros that you crossed with.
Sweethearts: Female interest group that helps the bros (especially the pledges).
Or male interest group that helps the sorors. Ex. Alpha Angels, Kappa Diamonds,
Sigma Doves, Delta Gents, Rhomeos, or for A-Phi-O, Phyettes (on historically
male chapters).
President: various names (Polemarch, Basileus, Polaris, or just President).
This list is by no means complete, but this will get you vaguely familiar with
what someone is talking about when using these terms.
Peace.
