I'd like to add my own thoughts to the message from our National Service
Chair forwarded to this list by the National Executive Director.
Brothers of Alpha Phi Omega do not need a national disaster to address
America's needs. Every day our members are at work in their communities
helping others, in crisis centers, homeless shelters, etc. etc.
But, during such disasters in the past, our members have responded
quickly and unselfishly all across the country. Hurricanes Hugo and
Iniki and the Great Midwest Flood are but three examples. At this time
of need, I encourage -- no, ask -- every chapter to respond to those who
need help in the aftermath of Hurricane Fran. Those near the affected
areas can help directly. Those further away can help through the Red
Cross. I remember one of our chapters in Iowa collecting non-perishable
foodstuffs and clothing during a football game in response to Hurrican
Andrew a few years ago.
I know many of you are already in action and don't need a request from me
or anyone else. May I ask, however, that ever chapter helping in any way
chronicle your efforts (with photographs if possible) and send that
information to the National Office. It makes a great Torch and Trefoil
article, and let's us keep track of all that you do to help others in
need.
Thank you all so much. College students rendering service, even in times
like these, doesn't make headlines, but it sure helps those who so
desparately need it after a disaster like this one. And, that is what
we're all about.
