It is with deepest sorrow that I inform you that Major James C.
Harrington USMC Ret., beloved brother, mentor, and Scouting Advisor to the
Epsilon Mu chapter at the University of Maryland passed away on Sunday
evening.
Major Jim had been a member of Alpha Phi Omega for more than 50 years,
joining a petitioning group at the Gamma Omicron chapter at Queens College
in 1940. He later went on to serve his country as a fighter pilot during
World War II and had a long distinguished military career.
He served as an active member of the Epsilon Mu chapter before he became
Scouting Advisor in the Fall of 1964. He received the Chapter
Distinguished Service Key in 1993. In 1995, the chapter renamed its
Leadership Award the Major James C. Harrington Leadership Award. That
spring, a banquet was held in his honor commemorating his 30+ years of
service as chapter advisor.
As an Eagle Scout the one thing the major tried to remind us of above all
was the first 8 words of the Scout Oath: "On my honor, I will do my
best..." As he did, so should we all.
