The fact that you are doing such a great project is far more important
than when it is done. The actual date of NSD is a guideline, but I know of
chapters that have had conflicts with the actual date, and have held it
either before or after.
The main thing is that you are doing it in your
community for the benefit of your community, and what a great effort it
is. Be sure to get some good public recognition and acknowledgement from
your local emergency manager/Red Cross/public officials and from the media
to help your disaster awareness and education effort in the community.
Although this year's theme is intended for NSD, it is certainly one worthy
of on-going and continuing involvement as a service emphasis for all
chapters. Disasters never go away, and people know very little about how
to prepare for, mitigate, or respond to them when they occur. APO can
make a huge difference in this effort.
