Hey, Brothers,
I have been reading this book entitled "The Spirit of a Man" by Iyanla Vanzant and she had some pretty interesting things to say about our three cardinal principles of Leadership, Friendship, and Service. I would like to share with you some excerpts form the book about two of those three. While she does have something to say about the omitted principle, Leadership (see Chapter 3-On The Backs Of Those Who Came Before), the discussion IMHO goes beyond the scope of how it relates to Alpha Phi Omega. But again, if you're interested, and you're @ B. Dalton or any other bookstore, feel free to check out Chapter 3.
Now for the other two principles.
Friendship
Personal relationships include friendships, loveships, business and social relationships. Who are your best friends? Have you been out together lately? Have you spoke to one another recently? Have you told your friends how you feel about them? It is important to keep your nurturing and supportive relationships alive and well. You might want to keep a supply of cards on hand. Thank-you cards. How-are-you cards. Just-thinking-about-you cards. When you cannot make contact in person, a card is quite sufficient."
Service
"What you give, you get back-tenfold. That is what service is about. Service is giving and doing, expecting nothing in return. Service is more than volunteering your time, energy, and resources. Service is also anonymous giving: buying a bag of groceries and leaving it at a shelter, paying the toll for the car behind you when you cross the bridge, leaving money to pay for a stranger's lunch in a restaurant, sending a money order without your name on it to someone you know is in need. Service is giving what you have in order to get what you need...When you make your plans and goals for balancing your life, be sure to include service. Without service, life is simply work."
