Here is a copy of the letter I send Nolan Ryan's secretary, and already have
received a baseball for the auction (not only does Ryan have a great fastball
but a great delivery on auction items, too). And please -- especially Larry
LaBell -- don't bombard Ryan's office with silly requests!!!!! (Just kidding,

Dear Jill,
My name is Neal Farmer, and I am writing on behalf of a
charitable organization in which I am involved.
My organization wishes to request what, I guess, everybody else
wants -- a baseball signed by Nolan Ryan for a silent auction to raise money
for a charity. However, we know that we are beggars, and will be happy with
whatever you can do for us.
The group I am in is Alpha Phi Omega National Service
Fraternity. We have almost 25,000 current undergraduate members and
about 260,000 alumni, which makes us the largest Greek-named
organization in the world. However, we are service, not social, which
means the 320 chapters we have in the U.S. perform service projects each
week. These include annual blood drives, raising money for the Heart Fund,
promoting AIDS awareness, counting votes for on-campus elections,
working with the Boy and Girls Scouts, YMCAs, YWCAs, etc.
We were founded in 1925 as the natural college extension of the
Boy Scouts/Explorers, but now take all college students as members --
including women. Our national headquarters is in Independence, Mo., and
can be reached by calling 816-373-8667.
We are having a silent auction between Dec. 27-29 at the Hyatt
Regency in downtown Phoenix during our 1996 National Convention,
where we expect approximately 2,000 to attend. We will donate all monies
rasied to the Red Cross, which is our group9s National Program of Emphasis
this year.
If possible, we would like to have the item before Nov. 15, as that
will give us time to promote nationally for the auction. If you have

Please find out to whom to send the letter, and his/her addresss before
you mail it (And please mail soon). Also, follow up with a phone call to see
if they received the letter (Don't ask what our chances are during the initial
phone call). If you have to, then call again on Nov. 15 -- the deadline I have
imposed to try to receive items (however, some will not mail auction items
until 2-3 weeks before any auction, as per their policy).
Change my name for yours, if you would like. But you also can use my
name, address and phone number, if you desire. The only thing I ask if you
use my name is to mail me a hard copy of the letter so I know what is going
on if they call me.
Also, make sure the letter is only on one page. And, of course, do not
forget to change the item requested. (A football or shoes by a football player,
a basketball or shoes for a hoops player, a puck or a stick from a hockey
player, etc.). My hope if that all 320 chapters will be able to bring a
jersey/ball/something from their athletic department for the auction. (MIT
can bring a slide rule signed by the highest-paid professor.)
It also is necessary to have the request on APO letterhead. Write me or call
the National Office for letterhead (tell them I said it was OK for a non-board
member to use letterhead for the silent auction).

P.S. -- VERY IMPORTANT -- If you secure an item for the auction, please
let me know so I can either send you the form for a thank-you note, or so I
can write the thank-you note later. We MUST always thank those who
support us.
Also, I have decided to copy this to all APO-L, as I have received multiple
requests for this form. And maybe this form will jog someone into trying to
obtain an item for the auction who otherwise might not have tried.
