Well from what I've read over the past few days on this subject, my
opinion ought to ruffle some feathers.

Here's why, and I'll try and make this concise since in my opinion
this whole thread is off topic. But first some quotes from the APO-L
INFO file that alot of people seem to be unaware of.

Message Logs
APO-L communications are logged weekly. You may retrieve these
notebooks by sending the following command to
LISTSERV@VM.CC.PURDUE.EDU as the first line in a mail file:
GET APO-L LOGyymmw
where yy is the year and mm is the month and w is the week (where
A=week 1, B=Week 2, etc.) of the requested notebook.

Well looks like anyone can already subscribe to the list, in fact I
would even encourage non-APhiOers to subscribe and read to find out
more about us. But more importantly to keep in mind, THESE
CONVERSATIONS ARE ALREADY LOGGED AT PURDUE. Unfortunately they're
logged by when the conversation took place, not particularly useful
when all you remember is what the conversation is about.
Now you may think no one actually tries to use the logs at Purdue,
well I have, I'd say about 4 or 5 times over the past 5 years. And it
was a major pain to do so. Having a web searchable index (that
doesn't auto-delete more than a year old message logs, another pain),
would be a major benefit to anyone of us trying to research past
discussions that may have once again become relevant, a very common
circumstance when the topics rotate on a two year cycle due to the
convention.
We've already lost years of information, and hence are doomed to
repeat ourselves. :) Here's a chance to save it forever, make it easy
to access and search, and its free! Why are we complaining? This
list is public, there's no way around that on the net unless we were
to all encrypt our messages (and since no one caught the fact that my
PGP signature generated an ERROR the last and only time I used it on
this list, I can't believe anyone is truly serious about trying to
make this list private). The only thing that keeps this list from
being even more public than it is is obscurity. I don't believe in
security through obscurity. I believe information should be free, ie
without bounds. Our main purpose is SERVICE, why try to hide this
from people? Another purpose of ours is to expand our ranks, how can
we do this if we purposely conceal ourselves?
I say make us more visible! Make us more available! Allow our
history to self record itself! What have we got to hide that we would
write in email!? Nothing! That's what.
Well so much for concise. If you agree with what I've said, please
tell Ellen <ekranzer@harvard.edu>, she's the list administrator and
ultimately this is her decision.
