I must say that I agree with Yaneev .....
As both an alum of EM chapter, and an active grad student at ABO, I know
firsthand how work responsibilities can "take control" of one's life.
Last year I worked about 40 hours a week, but in 3 different departments
and at three different sets of hours.
Also, as a grad student, I am seeing how different campus cultures can be.
Some schools are heavily commuter based, at some schools many students
need to work in order to pay for classes - leaving less time to fulfill
service hour requirements.
And while in some ways, life as an alum is less erratic, some alums may
need a "break" from APO (and other collegiate-based activities) in order
to acclimate to new jobs, new homes, etc.
And even for actives, legislating service requirements for the Fraternity
as a whole is a bad idea. THat is why our Natinal organization provides a
framework - so that the differences in school climates does not exclude
any school from chartering a chapter
