You have to attend sectionals

You have to do this with your membership, or that...
Well I'm sure they are well intended; I would comment that
through diversity and not being rigid we are stronger, and more
responsive to changes in our environment. The more rigid things become
the less people there are going to be who are going to fit that
definition... I would say that by allow our chapter's the freedom to
decide their programs and membership we allow them to better tailor
their organization to fit the school. 20 hours a semester is sort of
silly with schools that have January Terms. There are some schools
where they are on as much as a quinmester system (why should I do a
100 hours a year when you only do 40?). There are also schools where
you spend one semester a year on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic
(there's just so much service you can do in your rack...). The other
thing with "rules" is that there has to be penalties.
If someone does not do 20 hours of service a semester are you
going to de-brother them? If your not willing to go enforce a rule
then don't bother making it. Personally that's not a rule I'd like to
enforce. As an example of this take a look at the "rules" Gamma Sigma
Sigma has and how they hurt the organization... but I'll leave that to
others to explain... suffice to say our strength as an organization
comes from the idea that the power flows from the chapters not from
the board. I work for my undergraduates, they do not work for me.
Service is given from the heart, not from the wallet or the
calendar... Service is giving what you have in excess. When service
becomes something you have to do it's lost it's point.
