I think that the current purpose better describes what we are. We owe
much to Scouting, and our principles began in their principles, but we do
not follow quite the same rules. Scouting has a religious bent which we
do not share; they do not admit homosexuals, a position that we do not
take. These characteristics of Scouting are, I assume, derived from the
Law (clean and reverent would be my guess). To say that we follow the
Scout Law, as in Oscar's proposal, seems to imply that we accept their
(the Scouts') understanding of the Law. But we don't, at least not
completely. I suspect that this was the reason why the BSA
wanted this particular change at the last Convention. They don't want
any ambiguity regarding the meaning of their principles.
None of this is to say that we don't follow the Scout Law. We might not
use the same words... but LFS encompasses the same philosophy of life as
do the twelve points. Rather like Jesus' two commandments say everything
that the original ten did. It's just a different point of view.
