The BSA was brought to this country in 1910 and was incorported in
February by William D. Boyce, a Chicago Publisher. In 1915 at Treasure
Island Scout Reservation (in the Delaware River outside of Philadelphia,
PA. Caroll Edson and E. Urner Goodman founded the Brotherhood of Honored
Scout Campers, aka the Order of the Arrow. Granted the orriginal Ordeal
ceremony conducted by E. Urner Goodman and Carrol Edson was much differen
then than it is today. In actuallity theirs back in 1915 looked more
fraternal than it does today. The members of the cermonial team wore
black robes with white sashes. Today's OA ceremonies are connected more
closely with the traditions of the Native American. Today's ceremony
teams wear Native American dress and make more references to Native
American culture. (This past June my Council, The Minsi Trails Council,
BSA held a Section Conclave where the first ceremony was re-enacted.)
It is quite possible that a group of Alpha Phi Omega brothers held to
re-write the Ceremonies at a National Order of the Arrow Conference. At
NOAC the delegates can propose changes to their ceremonies and procedures
just as we can at a National Convention.
But remember, an intiation ritual follows a formula and there are just so
many different ways to use this formula.
