To me this is perhaps the most frustrating part of the entire Gender
discussion in Alpha Phi Omega.
I've had Female members of the Fraternity argue vehemently to me that
using any separate term for Females other than Brothers is demeaning. The
"I joined a Fraternity, not a Sorority" argument.
I've had Female members of the Fratenrity argue vehemently to me that
using the same term(brothers) for both men and women in the fraternity is
sexist because being a brother implies that they are male. The "Do I
look like a male to you?" argument.
I have an opinion on this toward one direction (what we currently have),
but I've found the the people who have the strongest opinion on BOTH
sides of the discussion are women. I know of one chapter that the school
would derecognize it (killing the chapter) if they did not allow their
women to be called sisters if they wanted to. And that chapter contains
women on both sides of the argument.
Does anyone have any ideas short of of pitching the entire Greek Letter
thing and calling everyone members? (which I find abhorent)
