Greetings Brothers,

I can understand getting upset at being forced to go co-ed but
Jason blowing up like you did does nothing but make the problem worse. I
don't have a problem with co-ed chapters, in fact I was on the
Installation team for University of West Alabama chapter. What I do have
a problem with is a breach of trust, in 1976 a promise was made not to
force continuously active chapters to go co-ed. Forcing all-male chapters
to go co-ed results in a broken promise and a breach of trust. This is
not what A Phi O is about, we are all brothers and should trust each
other to a degree(read: not to break promises made). I am also a
traditionalist like Jason, but I do not believe that a solid argument can
be made on tradition alone.

RE: The Boy Scout Issue

Yes, I was a Boy Scout, but please don't use that against me on
this topic. A Phi O is *not* the Boy Scouts nor should it try to be. F.
R. Horton was searching for a foundation on which to base his ideas. He
found this in the ideals of the Boy Scouts, Brother Horton also felt that
the true ideals of Scouting could not be appreciated until one was older
and wiser. Brother Horton also noted that there was no organization for
Scouts when the became older, the ideals/code of Scouting were forgotten
and unused when they could be used the most. I feel the best way to state
the relationship between A Phi O and Scouting comes directly from my
pledge manuel: "While Scouting does not govern, finance, or control Alpha
Phi Omega, we must always be mindful of our heritage and our ties to
Scouting." Think of the basic premise of Scouting and it really is a good
code by which to live.

RE: The G.P.A. thing

While I realize every chapter is different, here at Delta we have
a GPA req. In order to initiate a pledge must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
Although we strictly enforce this, we have a req that ties into this to
aviod losing pledges to the GPA req., we also have a study hours req. A
pledge must have a certain number of hours(not sure of the exact number,
we just recently changed it) at the study location. They can study
anything they desire, but they must study. I believe this works well for
us as brothers(we have to be there to supervise and we get a good bit of
studying done as well). We also have brothers who are willing to tutor
the pledges, any class that a brother got a "B" or higher can be tutored
by that brother. Granted this won't work for all chapters, but it can be
something to ponder.

Thank you for your time and patience.
