I normally wouldn't care about any of this stuff, but I saw something in the
sea of posts I was reading that greatly disturbed me. One of the resolutions
that Mr. Crawford quoted, said (in the rationale section) that the national
fraternity is not bound to uphold past agreements. This is extremely untrue. I
firmly believe that if the fraternity makes an agreement, they are bound to
uphold that agreement as long as possible. I feel that is is firmly embedded in
our principles to be "true to self, and to each other, firm in loyalty."
Another reason that this is important is because (I would guess) that many of
the then all male chapters voted to go co-ed because they would have the option
of remaining co-ed. Regardless of what your opinion is on whether or not all
male chapters should still exist, it is necessary to realize that the
fraternity made a committment. That committment should not be denounced because
the national fraternity does not need to uphold its committments. That is just
wrong. IMHO, I think that you have to be REALLY insecure about yourself in
order to be so vehemently against all male chapters. Come on, they respect the
fact that our chapters are co-ed, why can't we show them some repect as a
chapter? Isn't that the whole point of the fraternity? You know, to have that
whole "standard of manhood" thing? Lately, I've seen a lot of regression from
the overall philosophies of the fraternity on this list, to the point where
people don't even respect each other's right to an opinion (it's okay to d
isagree with someone but you should NEVER question their right to express
themselves).
