** $755 SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS **
** APPLICATIONS ARE NOW AVAILABLE **
** DEADLINE FOR APPLYING: APRIL 4 **
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (The
Washington Center) is pleased to announce that scholarships of
$755 are now available for students to attend "The Independent
Sector: Issues and Causes" Academic Seminar. This 2-week leadership
development program will be held in Washington, D.C. from MAY 11-24,
1997, having been re-scheduled from its original dates in early
January. Based on this level of scholarship support, total costs
(program and housing fees) for all participating students is now $495.
The program will bring a diverse group of up-to 100 college and
graduate students to D.C. to take a closer look at the issues and
causes that motivate the nation's growing nonprofit community.
Students will meet w/ the leadership of some of America's most
respected and influential nonprofit organizations and participate in
lectures, panel discussions, skills workshops, and site visits to
relevant institutions in and around Washington, D.C.
A special emphasis is placed on examining those nonprofits which
focus on community/public service, voluntarism, and policy advocacy.
Special attention will also be given to exposing students to the
structure, organization, and management of nonprofit organizations,
and the functional areas within them.
As part of the program, students will also participate in a special
"mentoring" component as well as an organized community service
project. Students will also learn more about educational and career
opportunities within the independent sector, which is increasingly
being viewed as America's true "growth sector" in light of recent
trends demonstrating public and private sector downsizing.
As an academic program, students will have the opportunity to receive
up to 3 credits from their home institutions for their participation.
Reading and written assignments are a required part of the program
and students will be led in daily discussion groups by qualified
Faculty Leaders. These faculty members are selected based on their
academic and practical experience in an area relating to some aspect
of the nonprofit or service-oriented communities.
If you are a student currently enrolled at the undergraduate or
graduate levels at a 4-year college or university and you have an
interest in issues of broad social concern, you are the kind of
student we are seeking. Also, if you are currently enrolled in a
formal academic program focusing on an area relating to the nonprofit
world, you should also request a program application.
To request an application for "The Independent Sector: Issues and
Causes" Academic Seminar, please contact The Washington Center as
soon as possible. The application *deadline* is FRIDAY, APRIL 4,
1997 and you can reach The Washington Center at:
* 1-(800) 486-8921 (toll-free phone #);
* info@twc.edu (e-mail address);
* http://www.twc.edu (web page).
When contacting us, be sure to include your name, current address
(for mailing purposes), current phone #, and an internet address, if
applicable. A brochure and application will be sent to you within 5
working days. Based on the availability of scholarships, the program
will be competitive and selection will be based on the histories of
service and the leadership potential that each applicant
demonstrates. Students who are accepted will be given approx. 2
weeks to confirm their attendance after notification. Otherwise,
alternates will be selected.
Additionally, *housing* is also available for the duration of the
program to all students and faculty and students are required to
reside in Washington Center housing in order to receive a scholarship
award. Our housing facility is located in Arlington, VA directly
across the Potomac River from Georgetown and easily accessible by
METRO (D.C. mass-transit system).
In addition to this and other 2-week seminar programs, The Washington
Center also offers semester-long internship programs in all areas of
interest, including the independent sector. Academic credit is also
available to students who participate in these programs and
scholarships are also available. For more information on the
Independent Sector Internship Program and the full range of
educational opportunities we offer, contact us using one of the modes
listed above.
Thanks for taking the time to learn more about the "Independent
Sector: Issues and Causes" Academic Seminar. We look forward to
hearing from you soon!
