1997 COOL NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON STUDENT COMMUNITY SERVICE
WHAT'S NEXT? PUTTING VISIONS INTO ACTION

MARCH 13 - 16, 1997
CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY
CLEVELAND, OHIO

Since 1984, Campus Outreach Opportunity League (COOL) has led the way in
inspiring and training students in service. In these 13 years, COOL has
been the springboard for countless youth organizations and powerful leaders
into the service field, both on and off college campuses.

This year, the COOL National Conference on Student Community Service, makes
it way to the campus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio.
Join us and 3,000 students, faculty and staff from across the country for
three and a
half intense days of sharing experiences, asking tough questions, and
preparing to put visions into action.

WHAT IS COOL?
COOL is a national non-profit organization that promotes and supports
student involvement in community service and social change by helping
students start and strengthen campus-based community service programs. Our
mission is to educate and empower college students to strengthen our nation
through community service.

WHO COMES TO THE COOL CONFERENCE?
Students faculty, administators and others serving their communities attend
the COOL Conference. People addressing illiteracy, homelessness, racism,
hunger, health care, HIV/ AIDS, urban violence, drug abuse, domestic
violence, and other pressing community issues. The conference is primarily
a forum for students of differing political affiliations, cultural and
ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, physical abilities, faiths, and
socio-economic classes to come together in the challenge of creating and
celebrating a new reality within our communities.

WHY DO THEY COME?
The COOL Conference is the premier gathering of students involved in
Community Service. Participants come to: acquire critical technical
skills, discover new models for organizing groups and programs, find new
resources, teach each other, have new conversations, hear challenging
ideas, opinions, and biases, share hopes, heroes, and plans for the future.
The COOL Conference brings together a diverse pool of resources that are
not found anywhere else.

AT THE CONFERENCE YOU'LL HAVE THE CHANCE TO:

* Listen to some of the top leaders in community service and service
learning nationwide. Speakers will include former Governor of Ohio and
former Director of the Peace Corps Richard Celeste and Dr. Jody Kretzman of
Northwestern University, co-author of "Building Communities from the Inside
Out: A Path Toward Finding and Mobilizing a Community's Assets." Michael
Brown, the co-founder and President of the service corps, City Year, will
give keynote remarks on his experiences with this influential program.

* Join us for Into The Streets, a one day service project based on COOL's
highly successful national program of the same name. Participants will be
teamed with local community organizations to give immediate and direct
service.

* Lead or attend many of the 150 workshops on issues and topics like
coalition building, AIDS, recruiting volunteers, community service,
advocacy, culture and diversity, service-learning, grant writing, federal
funding and legislation, starting a service program, the environment, the
critical elements of service, literacy, the arts, social change,
homelessness and more.

* Explore the Opportunities Fair featuring exhibits by over 70 regional,
state, national, and international organizations. The Fair provides an
opportunity to collect information and resources to help your campus
programs, and to find out about graduate programs and job opportunities.

* Attend Discussion Panels and Open Forums on contemporary and
controversial issues focusing on developing and maintaining innovative and
effective service programs in our complex society.

* Take part in the OXFAM America Hunger Banquet, a dramatic illustration of
the inequitable distribution of resources worldwide. "Draw" a fate
determining whether you will be one of the 15% enjoying a gourmet meal, the
25% eating rice and beans, or the 60% waiting for plain rice and water.
It's an unusual experience which you can recreate on your own campus.
