If memory serves me correctly, Juliette Low was friends with Lord
and Lady Baden-Powell. She was impressed with the Boy Scouts and felt the
need to start a similar movement for girls.

I was a member of GSUSA for over ten years; eight years as a girl and
two as troop leader while in college. I became involved as a Junior(4-6 grade)
for three years, then dropped out for a year before becoming involved at
the council level. The main thing that kept me involved was the
trekking(road tripping for Girl Scouts). Through two large trips and
multiple weekend ones, I went to 19 states and 2 Canadian provinces. At
the council level, I was President of the Older Girl Planning Board
for a year and earned my Gold Award in 1993(highest award in Girl Scouts,
similar to the Eagle).
Actually my ties to Girl Scouts helped me become a brother. The person
I was refered to about becoming leader just so happened to be advising a
petitioning group of APO. Because of Naomi's advisement, we have strong
ties to the Girl Scouts. We sponser and lead the Daisy troop in town. We
also hold a Cookie Booth sale in March to provide all of the college
students an ample chance at buying Girl Scout cookies :)
