send this onward to those other Scouting forums that could use the
information, and please consider this when planning your next service
project or activity. Thanks!)
The Public Library in Falmouth, Kentucky, has lost most of it's
20,000 book collection due to the flooding last two weeks. Falmouth
is supported by other neighboring libraries, but according to the
Regional Librarian, Joyce Hoffman, those other libraries will be unable
to refill the many shelves and space that used to hold a wealth of
knowledge for the county and its youth.
EVERYONE has old books, maps, and globes around their homes. Some of those
books are sitting in attics, in laundry rooms and in garages, only seconds
or days away from going to the Sal Army or
Goodwill stores. Many of those books, even paperbacks, have given
us much enjoyment and personal satisfaction....wouldn't it be nice
if your book brightens a day in some folks' lives many miles away.
I am asking, as a fellow Kentuckian and Scouter, and as a brother of
Alpha Phi Omega, that you please canvass your units, Districts, and
chapters and please send to the Public Library, Falmouth, Kentucky
41040-1111 whatever you have...believe me, it's more than what
they have right now. They could also use some older computer and
audio-visual equipment (like older computers, cassette tapes and
recorders/players and the like) and paperbacks.
When you do send something, please let them know that your unit,
District, or Chapter is thinking about them and their plight....and that as
Scouters, we try to be of service to others at all times that we can be.
I ask for your consideration and for anything else you or your unit
or chapter can do to relieve suffering and to promote a little bit of
togetherness amoung people whom are clearly in need of anything we
can do for and with them. APO Chapters may wish to contact the
Northern Kentucky University Chapter to see if they can "piggy back"
onto planned service projects during Spring break or other times to
Pendelton County (not far from Cincinnati); Eagle Scout candidates
may wish to use this as a potential Eagle Service project (there's still
a lot of work to do to this, however....) and all of us whom hold the
Eagle or whom are Scouters may wish to consider helping others to
gather books and reference materals to send to the Public Library.
Thanks for your time in reading and considering this posting, and I do
apologize to those that feel that this is not an appropriate posting for
your forum....I would not have posted it if I felt that it did not cut
across what we are (or should be) about: service to others above ourselves.
(a mild disclaimer: I do not work for the Commonwealth of Kentucky
nor any of its agencies and was not asked to post this by any agency.
I am a proud member of my state, have been for years, and whenever
possible, I try to help my fellow citizens in any way I can. I cannot
be there in Falmouth or any of the other communities to help others;
therefore, I'm doing the next best thing: asking others to help them for
me.)
