This is a posting to recap what happened at the Section 43/44 Joint
Conference, held in Austin, TX the weekend of April 4-6.
First of all, I would like to thank all of the chapters that attended.
We had approximately 270 students attend, and had alumni from various
chapters, including National President Wilfred Krenek, Region 7
Membership and Extension Director Bill Kuhfal, Section 41 staff members
Sean S., Teri S. and Ryan H.(who conducted the LEAP program)
and James Horkman, former Section 43 Chair. If I forgot anyone, I
apologize immensely.
Friday night opened with a non-traditional roll call. Each school was
given a blank flag, a box of Crayons(tm) and time to create their own
flag. After the elapsed time had been reached, the voting delegates
lined up for the "Parade of Chapters." Yes, it's modeled after the
Olympic's Parade of Nations (what can I say.. I loved it in Atlanta.)
Winner of the "Best Flag Competition" was Alpha Gamma Omega (Univ. of
Texas at San Antonio).
Saturday consisted of panels (such as Risk Management, CPR, LEAP,
Membership, Pledge Round Table, etc.) and projects (such as a Carnival at
one of the elementary schools, a project at the Humane Society and a
Scouting Camporee).
The business meetings were conducted on Saturday at 2pm. Serving as
Section 43's secretary at the business meeting was Section 43 staff
member Lyn Belzer. Thank you, Lyn for taking notes at the meeting.
Section 43 Chair Michael Gardner was nominated for and re-elected by
acclamation and will serve for the 1997-1998 year. In addition, the
Section 43 staff structure was formally proposed and adopted by the
voting delegates. Created are 2 Area Coordinators which will work with
the Northern half of the section (Waco & Belton) and the Southern half
(San Antonio/Valley area). The Austin area will be worked with by the
Section chair and either or both of the Area Coordinators. In addition,
the position of Section 43 Leadership Development Coordinator was created
to work with the Region 7 LD Chair, as well as the LD Program Director
and the National Leadership Development Committee.
The appointees for these positions are:
Lyn Belzer - Northern Area Coordinator
Kevin Schantz - Leadership Development Coordinator
The Southern Area Coordinator will be filled before the end of this
Spring semester. I would like to congratulate both Lyn and Kevin on
their new appointments.
The conference was also host to a LEAP (LEadership Advancement Program)
and was very well attended by members of both Section 43 & Section 44.
Thank you to the staff who came down to coordinate this. I appreciate it
very much.
The 1998 Joint Section 43/44 Conference will be held in
Nacogdoches, hosted by Stephen F. Austin (Nu Sigma).
I strongly encourage you to attend if you can, as the area is absolutely
gorgeous.
Saturday night, the banquet was a success. With a Star Wars theme,
various members of the Conference Committe, National Board and Region
Staff were given Star Wars-related nicknames. I won't reveal any, due to
an oath of secrecy taken. Awards were given out to various chapters for
excellence in Leadership, Service and Friendship.
After the banquet, the theme party was a Luau (sp?) that took place
outside, due to some absolutely gorgeous weather.
In closing, I would like to commend the Undergraduate Convention
Coordinator, Sharon A. Lozano and her committee. Alpha Rho hosted a
successful conference, and I would like to thank them for all the hard work
that they have done in the past year to put on this conference.
Michael S. Gardner
1997-1998 Section 43 Chair
