Hi everyone!
As Lisa Covi mentioned in a previous post, we had a very successful Section 48
Conference this past weekend. I thought I'd fill y'all in on a few of the facts
'n' figures.
Over 175 brothers attended this weekend's conference, including members of 13 of
our (at that time) 14 active chapters, the University of Chicago (at that time)
petitioning group, and visitors from Zeta Epsilon, Tau Lambda, and Tau Omicron
chapters. We were honored to have National Program Directors Dave Emery, John
Wetherington, and Charlie Zimmerman and our Region VI Director Maggie Katz join
us for the weekend and participate in our seminars and business meeting.
The brothers of Sigma Sigma chapter at the University of Illinois-Chicago, led
by Tom Koziel and Mike Crehan, organized a simply splendid weekend. Some of the
highlights included Saturday morning's homemade breakfast; the City of Hope
fundraising service project, during which we collected $500 for cancer research;
plenty of seminars; and the most creative roll call I've seen in my 7 years in
this Section!
During the business meeting, we established the following dates and locations
for the 1997-1998 Section 48 events:
* The Summer 1997 Picnic will take place on July 26 at either Wildlife Prarie
Park (near Peoria, IL) or Starved Rock State Park (near Ottawa, IL).
* The Omega Epsilon chapter at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington
will host the first-ever Membership Development Conference on September 27.
* The Lambda Rho chapter at Augustana College in Rock Island will host the
Spring 1998 Leadership Development Conference.
* The Alpha Alpha chapter at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
will host the Spring 1998 Service Project.
* The Alpha Beta Gamma chapter at Knox College in Galesburg will host the
Spring 1998 Section 48 Conference.
Thanks and congratulations to all of our host chapters!
We presented 11 awards during Saturday night's banquet. With over 25
highly-qualified nominees, the Awards Committee had a difficult time selecting
the award recipients.
* Section 48 Distinguished Service Key: Dave Goode, Alpha Alpha chapter
alumnus, Section 48 Vice Chair and Membership/Extension Director
* Chapter of the Year: Alpha Alpha chapter, University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign
* Most Improved Chapter: Sigma chapter, Northwestern University
* Advisor of the Year: Bernie Castillo, Sigma Sigma chapter, University of
Illinois-Chicago
* Leader of the Year: Ted Lee, Sigma chapter, Northwestern University
* Friend of the Year: Julie Randazzo, Omega Epsilon chapter, Illinois
Wesleyan University
* Service Project of the Year: Battle of the Bands, Sigma Sigma chapter,
University of Illinois-Chicago
* Traveller of the Year: Omega Epsilon chapter, Illinois Wesleyan University
* Newsletter of the Year: "Apothegm", Alpha Alpha chapter, University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
* Percentage Attendance Award: Alpha Alpha Eta chapter, MacMurray College
* Man-Mile Award: Alpha Alpha Eta chapter, MacMurray College
Congratulations to all of our award recipients!
Sunday's activities included the dedication of Frank Reed Horton Way, at the
corner of Harrison and Halsted in Chicago, and the dedication of Alpha Phi Omega
Park on the campus of the University of Illinois-Chicago. We had about 3-4
dozen brothers from APO-USA and APO-Philippines attend the events.
The final event of this incredible weekend was the rechartering of Gamma Sigma
chapter at the University of Chicago. Brothers from all around Region VI and
from the Midwest Alumni Association of APO-Philippines participated in the
chartering ceremony, led by the Sigma Sigma chapter, and the following
fellowship event. Congratulations to our 31 newest brothers at our newest and
15th active chapter!
Many thanks again to Mike, Tom, and all of Sigma Sigma for their efforts this
weekend; to Dave, John, and Charlie for visiting us; to all of our
out-of-Section guests for providing us with an external perspective on our
issues and concerns; and to all the active chapters who once again showed their
dedication to our Section and our Fraternity. I'm looking forward to another
outstanding year in Section 48! :)
In L, F, and S,
Natalie

A neutron walks into a bar. "I'd like a beer," he says.
The bartender promptly serves up a beer.
"How much will that be?" asks the neutron.
"For you," replies the bartender, "no charge."
