Ayn Rand's philosophy is tripe. It's for people who do not know, or
refuse to realize, that there is much more to the world than their own
petty concerns. This country was founded on the idea of the individual's
pursuit of happiness, true, but our Judaeo-Christian roots have ensured
that it was not to the detriment of our fellow man. This "do your own
thing, and screw everyone else" garbage is fairly new, and, I'll be
willing to bet that most of it's proponents have not been through any hard
times where they had to rely on the help of others to see them through.

As for the mandatory service thing, I would say that it is a commendable
idea. You can tell that Bill is one of ours..... Unfortunately, what
most politicians do not realize is that big government can't get involved
in this sort of thing and get the same results. I doubt it will work the
way that it is intended. I'm thinking that Bill wants everyone to
experience what he learned in college in APO, but, he's forgotten that
that won't do you any good unless you've decided to do it on your own.
Further, mandatory service isn't really service--at least not in the sense
that we think of it. We consider service to be something that we do for
others for free, with no strings attached, and with no reward expected.
Mandatory service is something that people will do with the expectation
that, in doing it, they will be rewarded with a diploma or a degree.
While it still gets things done, after a fashion, it doesn't do anything
for the person serving except make them resentful that they have one more
hoop to jump through before they can meet their goals. "I'm doing this
because I have to" is so very different from "I'm doing this because I
want to." The politicians are trying their best to make us better
people, and, for all their efforts, that is beyond their power.

Well, I've got to get some sleep--have to meet my ride to Nova
Southeastern's chartering (woo hoo!!) in a couple of hours. I will have
more to say about this later......
