Fellow Brothers,
I've decided against including the message in my reply, because I think
we've all seen it, and tried to digest it.
I've heard about this service summit. I saw an interview that Colin
Powell gave with Oprah Winfrey. The idea behind the summit is not to put
people into slavery or involuntary servitude. The idea rather is to get
EVERYONE to face the fact that we've got problems right here. We can no
longer afford to blame the problems of homelessness, poverty, illiteracy,
etc. on anyone else but ourselves. Colin Powell wants to get everyone
involved in some way to help solve our problems creatively. He would
like to see business not just to sign a check, but rather create programs
or expand programs they already have to help others. For example, Taco
Bell created jobs opportunities for teenagers, and Colin Powell
challenged McDonald's to do something. He is also asking Cooperate
America to give each and every one of their employees one week with pay
to do service somewhere. Imagine having one week to go and do what we in
Alpha Phi Omega love to do...service, and not being docked pay to do
Habitat For Humanity or Mentoring in the schools, let's say. No one can
force us to do service, but we can all be inspired to find one project
that we can feel passionate about and take action. I believe that this
is the spirit behind the Summit.
