One way of drawing the line is that an event that is being attended
primarily by brothers and pledges can be seen as being an APO event.
These are the types of events not to have brothers and pledges drinking
together.
However, it goes a bit far to say that if you are a brother and a pledge
happens to be drinking in the same place, one of you must stop or
leave. A case in point: I was invited to a party by some of me non-APO
friends (yes I do have some) during me senior year. I had a drink, and
then ran into one of me littles there. He had also already had some to
drink as well. Now, if you follow the no drinking with pledges to the
letter, one of us would have had to leave, or neither of us could have
any more to drink.
I guess I would draw the line where it goes from being a party where
there happens to be a couple of brothers and pledges, to one where a
majority or significant minority of the people present are brothers.
Another key factor in determining the line; do the brothers have a say
in whether the alcohol is being served there??? Under this
circumstance, if something does happen to a pledge, you are taking the
risk of news services picking up the story of "Pledge injured while
drinking at an APO frat party." They won't care if it was actually an
"officially" sanctioned party. All that will matter is that they'll
find out that APO had a strong presence there. Not the type of
publicity we need or want.
