FYI, here's a little biography regarding my disaster training,
experience, WHY, and how APO can get more involved:
I have been a Red Cross Disaster volunteer for almost two years. I am
currently Coordinator of Disaster Volunteers (CDV) for Florida's Coast to
Coast Chapter in Daytona Beach, FL. I am an active member of the Disaster
Action Team, as well as County and Chapter Disaster Teams. I am an
active office worker dealing with administration, case work, preparedness
and planning.
I am a national (DSHR) volunteer registered in the following functions:
Mass Care/ERV Technician (MC-ERV/T)
Logistics Technician (LOG/T)
Local Disaster Volunteers Technician (LDV/T)
I am also cross-trained in the following functions: Damage Assessment, Family
Service, Communications, Shelter Surveying, Staffing, Training, and Community
Disaster Education
I have experience at over 35 structure fires, 1 brush fire, 3 tornados,
and 2 floods. I have only been on one national assignment as an ERV
Driver in DR160: Northwest Pennsylvania 7/96 Floods.
One of my goals and priorities is to formalize a Statement of
Understanding (SOU) between the American Red Cross and Alpha Phi Omega to
lay out a structure or method for obtaining volunteers for disaster
relief. As the largest collegiate organization in the country, Alpha Phi
Omega is a tremendous resource for the Red Cross in disaster operations.
I make it a point to inform the Red Cross of Alpha Phi Omega resources
such as in this instance. I encourage APO chapters to foster
relationships with their local chapters in planning and preparedness. I
encourage APO Brothers to get trained as disaster workers. I encourage
chapters to sponsor fundraising and community education on behalf of the
Red Cross.
The Red Cross needs out help, and that's what we're all about! Good
people help because "Help Can't Wait!"
If anyone has any questions, PLEASE feel free to contact me for more
information.
