hey all, i figured ide say a few things before i unsub for the 4th of July
weekend.
first off, everyone who is driving down to DC (and anywhere else) drive
safely and have a safe trip.
Secondly, for said people driving to DC.. it should be noted that Radar
Detectors are illegal in Virginia. Its not only illegal to have them
turned on.. its illegal to have them in the car. If your stopped and a
trooper finds it, it could be confiscated and you could be fined. Best
thing to do is put it in the trunk, or under the back seat or something
unplugged and unbatteried (that way you can just say that you just drove
into the state (which you did) and that's why its in the trunk). just FYI.
Also because of the holiday the state, county, and city police are out in
force.. so obey the traffic laws people (even on the beltway), and dont
anyone dare comment about practicing what i preach ;).
As for the 4th of July itself we will be meeting around midday on the mall
next to the lincoln memorial. First people there should set themselves up
next to the 2nd or 3rd tree (Depends on where there is more space) on the
left side of the reflecting pool, if your looking at the washington
memorial from the lincoln memorial. If anyone has any apo flags/banners
bring them :).. oh and ofcourse wear letters so i can recognize you.
Btw its a good idea to park your car at a metro station (New Carralton in
MD, and Vienna metro in VA) and take the metro in.. metro sells 5 dollar
all day passes at any station. The station you want to get to is Foggy
Bottom which is on the Orange line.... Exit the station and take a
right... you will be @ GWU's campus.. kinda.. just keep walking down the
street and you will eventually find the lincoln memorial :). You can also
get off at Smithsonian... and from there head towards the washington
memorial.. and then straight on to the lincoln.. but.. that's the far way
to go (right Quinn?).
If you want to drive into DC... well. dont. Unless you want to wait till
4am to get your car out (I-66, I-395, US29, US50, US1, and every other road
into and out of DC turns into a parking lot that day :)).
What to bring with you to the mall:
yourself
a blanket or picnic spread or something to sit on
bring an umberalla (against the sun and the rain)
a deck of cards is good
a radio or stereo WITH headphones!!
drinks!!! lots of them.. its gets warm.. and sometimes the soda vendors are
kinda far away.
*******************NOTE**********
DO NOT BRING ANY SORT OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE... #1 this is an official apo
event (Cause lots of people wear letters and such) #2 alcohol is illegal on
the mall anyway.... if your caught drinking.. you and the park police are
gonna have a little chat.
Food (chips, sandwitches)
People usually stay around till after the fireworks display, some leave
before them to avoid the rush to the metro stations. Afterwards there
MIGHT be a get together at my place if people arent too tired (well ok
there will be a get together anyways of the people staying at my place for
the weekend ;)).
Also i am having a party on Saturday the fifth of July, everyone is invited
(note this is not an official apo party) and people should start showing up
by 5 or 6pm.. also.. its BYOB.
directions to my place.. well i sent extensive ones to aposoc-l.. and i am
not going to clog the listservers again.. i live @ 9013 Edgepark road, its
right off of route 7, where route 7 and the dulles toll road (267) meet (if
your on route 7 west... after the bridge that goes over 267 there is a
uturn.. take it.. tkae your first right.. that's laurel hill.. your second
left is edgepark)
if your on route 7 east, then right after the Lewinsville road intersection
take a right onto laurel hill (its where the World Wildlife Federation
Building is).
