Did you know how Sweetest Day started (which is October 18) ?
More than 70 years ago, a Cleveland man, feeling that the city's
orphans and shut-ins too often felt neglected and forgotten,
conceived the idea of showing them that they were indeed remembered.
He did this with small gifts which he distributed with the help of
friends and neighbors on the third Saturday of October.
During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to
participate in this remembrance, which came to be known as Sweetest
Day. In time, the idea of spreading cheer to the underprivileged was
broadened to include everyone.
Sweetest Day became, in many parts of the country, an occasion for
remembering others with a kind act or a small remembrance. It
continues today as a day when a smile, a word of encouragement for
someone who needs a boost, a long-intended letter or some small gift
proves an adventure in happiness.
Strange, perhaps, that just one day should be singled out to make
someone happy. But, maybe a day such as this is needed...a day
dedicated to the happiness of others...as a reminder for every day of
the year. A reminder that magic is hidden in even the smallest act
of unselfishness - that setting aside one's own cares for a day and
going out of the way to make someone else happy is the essence of
true happiness.
