Hello, Y'all,
This is in response to the recent request for information on the position of
Sergeant-At-Arms'. I was the SAA last semester, so I hope I can be a bit of help. In my
chapter (Zeta Epsilon, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN), the SAA is a one semester
position. They are not a member of the Exec-Board, although they are considered a "Semester
Officer" (we couldn't come up with a better term than that). The SAA does not report directly
to anyone. As for the duties, please allow me to quote our Chapter Bylaws:
Sergeant-At-Arms
Prerequisites: The candidate must be an active member and also be able to carry out
parliamentary procedure.
Duties: The Sergeant-At-Arms shall keep and maintain all Chapter ritual materials and
other Chapter properties and perform such parliamentary and ceremonial procedures as are deemed
necessary. He or she shall prepare, distribute, collect, and count ballots at all elections, as
well as be responsible for overseeing the review and/or revision of the Chapter Bylaws. He or
she shall also be responsible for keeping order at all General Meetings.
Basically, the SAA organizes all ceremonies and makes sure the Chapter keeps to some
appropriate form of parliamentary procedure. During my stint as SAA, we also went through a
major re-write of our Chapter Bylaws, which I oversaw.
If you have any more questions that I did not answer (I may have forgotten something)
feel free to contact me personally at

I hope this helps.
