I'll say amen to this. Transfer membership saved the chapter here at
Illinois State University. The chapter was completely dead, but we managed
to get 3 members through a conventional rushing process (one of which didn't
return the following fall and the other two were juniors at the time).
However, the two transfer members that came in the following fall were more
able to help steer the chapter in the right direction (since they, as
actives, can influence the chapter in ways that advisors can't). Under the
direction of those two transfer members, they implemented a rush/pledge
program that brought in 8 initiates last spring and they're pledging 20+
this fall.
This message actually speaks more to not giving up on extension efforts than
it does to singing the praises of transfer members. Just for the sake of
argument, though, if we made it difficult for those transfer members to join
the chapter, they probably wouldn't have. It's easy to see where that would
have left the chapter...wasting all the hard work that the alumni, the
brothers of several surrounding chapters, and those three "original"
initiates had put in to try to get something going.
