While I definitely do not want to become involved in the BSA discussion
that appears to have begun on the list recently, I feel I should comment
briefly concerning the relationship between BSA and APO because, as
National President, I helped clarify that relationship. See the Fall
1993 Torch & Trefoil.
The mutually supportive relationship between BSA and APO continues by
agreement between both organizations. At the same time, as
organizations, we acknowledge our respect for the constitutional right of
all private, voluntary organizations to determine their own values and
policies. Most importantly, our two organizations will continue to
collaborate in serving the youth of America. I might add that this
clarification of our common interests enhances both of our abilities to
cooperate with other youth organizations, in APO's case, GSUSA and
Campfire.
We are all entitled to our own views on the membership policies of any
organization, including BSA *and* APO. But, there is a big difference
between disagreeing with an organization's policies -- or trying to
change them from within -- and forcing it to change. For myself, I
defend the right (not necessarily the righteousness) of private,
voluntary organizations to determine their own membership because someday
APO could be next on the list of those who would deny such organizations
that right. That goes for BSA, GSUSA (admit males?), Gay/Lesbian Rights
Organizations (admit heterosexuals?), Catholic Church (admit Methodists),
Young Democrats (admit Republicans?), etc., etc.
Having now read what I've written, there is no doubt I'll receive many
replies. That being the case, I do not intend to take a position on any
organization's policies -- only to defend their right to make their own
policy unless they receive government support, in which case they are
subject to certain rules. Please do not construe my comments to include
anything beyond that.
In trepidation,
Jerry Schroeder
Immediate Past National President
