Just a quick comment from a transfer brother here...
Active membership may be transferred from one chapter to another if the member
transfers institutional enrollment, provided that the new chapter accepts the
member as an active member, and that new member completes the necessary form
and sees that they are forwarded to the National Office.
This is what is in our national bylaws... It specifically gives the chapter
the right to choose its own membership, even in the case of transfers. A
Chapter should not deny that this person is a Brother of APO, but they do have
the right to deny that this person is a Brother of Chapter XXX.
Personally, I re-pledged when I transfered, the requirements were very
different, and I didnt feel good about juding others on requirements I had not
met. Others have chosen to just join right into the fray.
Having pledged at two different chapters, I can very much appreciate the
variety of requirements that are out there to be voted upon. I do not agree
at all that completing a check list of requirements is a good indicator of
being prepaired for Brotherhood. It has not been so in either Chapter that I
have been a part of, however I know that it is elsewhere.
APO thrives by it's ability to adapt to the circumstances at each school, and
I don't think that broad generalizations about how things should be run
someplace else are at all appropriate. (with the exception of things like not
allowing hazing, etc... )
I did note the comment on female transfers to all male chapters, while the
policy stated (that women would be allowed to come around but not to vote,
etc) is the policy at Delta and several others, there are other chapters who
have yet to encounter the issue and have the attitude that they will wait and
see and deal with it when it happens.
I would like to point out that the all male chapters are a small number of
our chapters, and we are devoting a lot of time and energy to a debate that is
already being handled by a committee of our peers. I value greatly every
chapter that we have, and the individuality and diversity it brings to our
make up. I suspect, however, that our time and energies here could be better
spent on issues that apply more widely to all of our chapters, and which are
perhaps not under review elsewhere... Like improving Rush for our smaller
chapters, Improving Service or Leadership Development at our stronger ones, or
membership extension.
We are dedicated to finding peaceful solutions to the issues that face the
world, one of the first steps to doing this, I feel, is to accept that
different people different places are just plain different. And not get upset
by that fact, but embrace it and learn from them. The all male chapters
represent a unique part of our fraternity, as do the all/predominently black
chapters, female chapters, etc. Lets use our time to build one another up,
not attack each other, ok?
